Emergency Department

Pioneer Community Hospital operates a 5 bed Emergency Room staffed by a physician or nurse practitioner. The ER is equipped to treat all ages with a wide range of medical conditions by physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses certified in advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support. A triage nurse evaluates the condition of all patients who enter the Emergency Department in order to treat the most seriously ill patients first. However, all patients are seen in a timely manner. If a patient's condition can be diagnosed and treated in the Emergency Department, our emergency physicians will provide the needed care. Patients requiring further treatment may be admitted or stabilized and transferred to a higher level of care.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy department oversees the dispensing of all medications in the hospital. All medications are reviewed by a licensed pharmacist on site. The hospital recently installed an automatic dispensing system. This system utilizes bar code technology at the bedside to identify the patient and verify the correct drugs prior to administration to help eliminate medication errors.

The respiratory therapy department is staffed by certified respiratory therapists. The department provides a variety of cardiac and respiratory services including:

• Pulmonary Function Tests
• Cardiac Stress Tests
• Holter and Loop Monitors
• Breathing Treatments and Oxygen Therapy
• Arterial Blood Gas Testing
• Airway Management And Mechanical Ventilation

 

 

Surgical Services

The Surgical service department provides elective general surgery and endoscopic procedures. Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

The surgeons are supported by a team of qualified surgical nurses and a certified registered nurse anesthetist- a nurse who has completed advanced training in anesthesia and related procedures.

Swing Bed Program

The swing bed program allows patients to remain in the hospital after discharge to enhance their recovery and rebuild strength. 24 hour care is provided by skilled and caring nurses and therapists. The hospital provides a better nurse to patient ratio than a typical nursing home or larger medical center. Transfers are also accepted from other hospitals not offering this service.

Inpatient Care

A 24-hour emergency room provides around the clock treatment for minor ailments to life threatening conditions. Ancillary services for inpatients include surgery, laboratory, radiology, respiratory and rehabilitation therapies.
The hospital is fully licensed by Virginia's Department of Health and certified by the centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Our 25 bed Acute Care Unit is staffed with experienced nurses and nursing assistants. Our nurse to patient ratio allows our staff to provide individual and alternative care. Patients are treated with competence, compassion and courtesy. Family members are recognized as a major support system for patients and are involved in the patient's care and decision making.

The radiology department utilizes a filmless, digital system that includes a state of the art Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). Images are read and interpreted off-site by board certified, sub-specialisty radiologists. Imaging services include

Pioneer Community Hospital's Outpatient Behavioral Health program is designed to provide assistance to individuals over 40 who may be suffering from behavioral health problems, such as depression and anxiety. We offer group therapy, health education and leisure activities. Individual and family counseling is also available. Our program is staffed with a Registered Nurse, Licensed Certified Social Worker and an Activities Director.

Our Rehabilitation Staff are highly skilled professionals who design treatment programs to help patients achieve mobility and a greater degree of independence. It is our goal to restore normal level of functioning following illness or injury and to provide patients with high quality Rehabilitation services, close to home.
